Coffee County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Can you catch rabies from all bats?
Rabies is a pretty scary disease. It's caught almost always through a vicious attack from an already infected animal after it bites you and transmits the virus inside its saliva into your body. Its symptoms start with a harmless itch around the bite, but quickly transform into many serious issues and can even escalate to mortality. Rabid animals, with their bloodshot eyes, foaming mouth, and crazed aggression are the stuff of nightmares. One animal almost always associated with rabies, however, is the bat.

Well, DO all bats carry rabies?
The short answer? No, not really. Only rabid bats carry rabies. Are majority of the bats rabid then? Once again, the answer is no. A rabid bat is like any other rabid animal; it became rabid because another rabid animal attacked but it was able to escape alive. You're in as much danger of catching rabies from a rabid bat as you are from any other rabid animal you encounter; if you are in range, it will strike.

Still skeptical?
Let's look at the data. Across multiple types of research, case studies and data from pest control agencies that monitor and control the bat population, the percentage of rabid animals from the total bats that were tested is found to be around 5%. While this ratio isn't too large given the data, we have, in reality, the actual number is even lower. This is because the data had been collected from samples of bats that were caught in the wild, bats that were too weak to fly away and avoid capture. So, in theory, there probably are many more healthy bats out there than rabid ones.

If all bats aren't rabid, why are they villainized like this?
Well, that's because of all the cases of rabies in humans over the past few years were caused by bites from rabid bats. Now wait a minute, you say. Doesn't that directly contradict what's written in the above paragraphs? Not really, no. See a rabid bat is already weak with disease and so lacks the energy to fly away when a human approaches it. It's also more prone to attack because of the increased aggression due to the rabies virus. In short, humans catch rabies from bats because we make the mistake of approaching it. And how do you avoid that mistake?

How to spot a rabid bat
There are three things to look out for: Is its flight disoriented and clumsy? Does it not fly away when it sees you near it? Is it out during the day when it should normally be asleep? If even one of these attributes is spotted in a bat, then there's a high chance it's rabid. Your next move? Stay as far away from it as possible and call the experts to deal with it.
